Parents Who Host Parent Alert 2025

Rittman SALT Coalition reminds you that providing alcohol to minors is illegal. While most parents and teens do not engage in underage drinking, this campaign encourages open communication about its dangers. Join us in promoting safe, sober celebrations.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) states that giving teens alcohol increases their likelihood and amount of drinking. Legal consequences for violating social host laws include:
- Additional Liability: If a minor drinks at your party and causes harm, you could be sued and held liable.
- Minor Over.08 Limit: Penalties for minors testing over .08 BAC are similar to adult OVI charges. For a first OVI, penalties include 10 days to 1 year in jail, a $500-$1,000 fine, 6 license points, and a 6-month to 3-year suspension. For a second OVI, penalties can include up to 1 year in jail, up to a $1,500 fine, and a suspension of up to 5 years.
- Additional Charges: Underage OVI can lead to traffic offenses, open container citations, prohibited acts charges, and falsification charges.
Underage drinking has other legal, health, and safety risks, including:
- Youth who start drinking before 15 are 6.7 times more likely to develop alcohol use disorder at some point in their lives, according to research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychology.
- According to the NIAAA, youth are more likely to be involved in a physical or sexual assault (either victim or assailant) after drinking.
- Over 4,300 youth die annually from underage drinking-related incidents, including vehicle crashes, homicides, suicides, alcohol poisoning, falls, burns, and drowning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
