Connecting with Your Kids
And Why it Counts as Prevention

Did you know that the #1 deterrent for youth substance use is to have at least one healthy adult relationship in their lives?
You can be that relationship.
Many youth start using substances out of a sense of loneliness, curiosity, or trying to fit in with peers. While adults aren’t peers (and shouldn’t try to be), they can provide a sense of steadiness and safety that kids and teens long for, especially in the home.
Being approachable, nonjudgmental, and seeking to understand are qualities that go a long way when trying to connect with the youth in your life. If they know that you care about them and won’t overreact, then they will come to you when they have questions, or even when they have made a mistake.

Below are some other practical suggestions for how to connect with your kids from day to day!
Ideas for how to connect with your kids:
- Learn a TikTok dance together
- Show an interest in their hobbies (even if you don’t understand them!)
- Help them with their homework
- Ask them to help you with something you know they’re good at
- Make plans to do something together as a family, and ask your child or teen how they would like to spend that time
- Make time to ask your kids about their day, while also being understanding if they don’t feel like talking
It’s good to be aware of the current emoji drug codes youth are using. The chart below is from the DEA and may be a helpful too.
